Hi there! My name’s Elaine, and my Chinese name is伊莲. A few things about me: I’m from Manchester and I’ve lived in China for a long time (although, my Chinese definitely has room for improvement)! You know, for more than a decade, I’ve been teaching English as a foreign language in Beijing. I’ve learned so much from my students and colleagues over the years; I really owe them a lot.
In fact, during 2022-2024 I worked as an IELTS Speaking Examiner for the British Council. I learned a great deal about the IELTS, but after two years I missed teaching so much that it was only a matter of time before I decided to return to the classroom. Now, working as an IELTS Speaking Teacher at BUFT, I’ve fallen in love with teaching again. I’m also really enjoying the BUFT campus life: communicating with students and colleagues, preparing lessons in the newly-renovated library, popping into Luckin for a quick coffee, keeping my fridge well-stocked with healthy food from the supermarket...
I could go on, but perhaps a good way for us to get acquainted is to tell you about my day...
10:00 Off to the library to add the finishing touches to next week’s lesson materials
For example, my students will soon be making group presentations about one of the topics we’ve discussed so far. To help them do this, I’ve created an example presentation script so they can extract some useful language by themselves. I’ve also supplied some authentic situations for my students to consider. This lesson will also be a great opportunity to review what we’ve learned so far in our course.
Once a week, I also drop off some old books at the library. I hope my small donations can help build the collection of English books available to students who would like to read for study, and pleasure. FYI: I majored in English Literature at Hull University.
13:45 Time to set off for my weekly 2pm singing activity
Every Wednesday, students who have signed up for the ‘Karaoke Club’ chat about music, learn some new words and practice their vocal talents. This week’s song is Taylor Swift’s 2008 pop-country hit, ‘You Belong With Me’. As a learner of Mandarin Chinese, I’ve experienced first-hand how beneficial and fun it can be to connect with music from another culture.
17:00 Time to get ready for my weekly jog with the BUFT running group
It’s our third outing this semester, and I’ve really enjoyed getting to know my fellow running enthusiasts. 10km is a piece of cake when we run together. Plus, what better way to wrap up a productive day and get a good night’s sleep for another day at my new home, BUFT!
